In order to select the correct foam for your project there are
three factors to consider regarding the foam and it's ratings. These
factors are High Resiliency, Density, and Indentation Load.
 Basically
there are three specifications you need to consider regarding the
purchase of upholstery foam. The first thing to consider
is if the foam is rated Highly Resilient (HR). This rating
is simply measuring the foam's ability to resist wear. HR foam is
usually Fire Resistant and can be used in most areas where fire
codes apply. If you want your foam to last it's best to select this
grade.
Next, is the Density Rating of the foam. This usually ranges
between 18 and 23 with 23 being the best. This type of foam can
be expected to hold it's shape and comfort level for longer periods
of time than the 18 grade.
Finally you need to be concerned with the foam's Indentation
Load Deflection. This is the measure of how much pressure it
takes to compress the foam to 25% of it's original thickness. Once
again this is the measure of the foam's firmness.
